About the Project Work on a mobile, GPS-heavy game built in Unity with a C# backend hosted on AWS. The game is functional but needs a strong engineer to: Fix core gameplay and data issues Optimize performance and loading times Bring AWS costs in line with the current user base Polish the UX for an upcoming market test What You’ll Do Gameplay & GPS Fixes Diagnose and fix issues where the game is not reacting correctly to GPS coordinates, especially outside the defined gameplay area. Implement or refine geofencing and coordinate logic (radius checks, distance calculations, edge conditions). Data & UI Integration Ensure data that’s already recorded on the backend is displayed accurately in the Unity client. Implement and refine Unity UI screens, HUDs, and data-driven displays. Performance & Load-Time Improvements Profile and optimize the startup flow so users reach gameplay faster (reduce or merge loading phases). Optimize asset loading: scenes, addressables, bundles, lazy loading, and network calls. AWS & Backend Efficiency Review the existing AWS architecture and backend implementation (C#, .NET). Identify why the AWS bill is high relative to current usage and implement cost optimizations. Add or refine logging, monitoring, and basic observability for both backend and mobile client. Polish & Market Test Readiness Fix cosmetic front-end issues in Unity (layouts, fonts, responsiveness, basic visual polish). Work with the founder to make the app feel ready for a structured market test. Create a simple technical backlog and recommendations for the next 6–12 months of development. Must-Have Skills & Experience 5+ years of professional experience in software development with 3+ years in Unity. Strong C# skills across both Unity and backend code. Hands‑on experience shipping at least one mobile game or real‑time app in Unity to iOS and/or Android. Solid experience with GPS/location‑based features: Consuming location services on mobile. Implementing geofencing, distance checks, map interactions, or similar. Strong debugging skills in existing/legacy codebases. Experience integrating Unity apps with RESTful APIs (JSON), handling offline/spotty network conditions. Practical knowledge of AWS for .NET backend apps, such as: EC2 / ECS / Lambda API Gateway / Load Balancers RDS or DynamoDB CloudWatch, basic logging, and metrics Demonstrated performance optimization experience: Reducing load times and memory usage in Unity. Profiling and fixing bottlenecks in both client and backend. Excellent written and verbal communication; able to work directly with a founder and explain tradeoffs. Nice‑to‑Have Experience with location‑based games (e.g., Pokémon Go‑style concepts). Knowledge of multiplayer / P2P / proximity‑based interactions in Unity. Familiarity with: Unity Addressables CI/CD pipelines for mobile apps AWS cost optimization patterns (right‑sizing, autoscaling, reserved instances, CloudFront, S3 offload) Prior experience taking over projects from offshore teams and stabilizing them.
